In September 2012, Proplaneta facilitated a group of community members and Belize Red Cross volunteers in Stann Creek District, Southern Belize, to produce a participatory video to inspire community preparedness in the context of climate change.
The group did 10 interviews in three different villages featuring local stories on disasters, the need to prepare, change and respond, all in the context of climate change.
After editing the video on a participatory approach, with the support of the local Red Cross team, the video was taken to Independence town, 100 Km South, for a community screening. After the film, there was a short debate on lessons learned by the viewers. They understood quiet well that even though they had never suffered similar impacts, climate change is already happening therefore they better start getting organized and be prepared.
Moving around a large city such as Rio de Janeiro is a big challenge, and the youth are amongst the top users of the local public transportation system.
With the objective of bringing them closer to the various decision makers that control the system, 60 youth representatives were sponsored by the transport federation to participate at ETRANSPORT, one of the largest transportation conferences that happens biannually in Brazil. The youth aged 12 - 28 from different areas of Rio Janeiro, took part in many activities developed using different participatory methodologies in order to increase their voices and lower the gaps.
One of the activities was learning and producing a participatory video reflecting their voices and perspectives on trends and alternative solutions that can help their mobility in Rio de Janeiro. Their film was presented at the conference closing session where over 300 decision makers watched the youth's video with surprised and joyful faces. Overall the qualified audience was very impressed with their courage, creativity and speed on addressing important messages to such an unique crowd.
We facilitated the farmers to identify their best sustainable rural practices and taught them how to film so their “green messages” could be shared with other rural communities.
In this sense and as a pilot-project, we introduced participatory-video to a farmer community in Lalavadar village, Gujarat state, India, which was already capacitaded on sustainable rural practices by CEE.
The vision of this Group is to contribute to the knowledge and practice of sustainable development of ecologically sensitive, stressed, fragile areas through promotion of equitable and sustainable livelihood strategies.
This participatory-video project was done with the support of Center of Environment Education (CEE) India and its Sustainable Rural Development Programe Group.
Lalavadar farmers chose and filmed eight messages on their own in just a few days. The editing was also done with the farmers on a participatory-editing approach as illustrated in the final clip of their film.
Lalvadar film was shown in a neighbor village where farmers decided to “do just like their unknown friends” and implement four of the eight practices starting on the following day.
We hope you enjoy watching as we did enjoy helping to make this happen. And please share it with other farming communities!
Our kindest green regards,
Lalavadar farmers, Fernanda Baumhardt/Pro Planeta and CEE staff

Environmental education is a crucial way of empowering individuals and communities to contribute to building a global sustainable society. The Amazon Ecological Conservation Center (CEPEAM) near Manaus, Brazil, was founded in 1992 by SGI President Daisaku Ikeda, and this film highlights its environmental education activities aimed at strengthening local people’s understanding and empowering them to take action for change.
Directed by Fernanda Baumhardt and produced by SGI in cooperation with Proplaneta.
